Things have gone from bad to worse for the Seattle Mariners.
On Friday, the M’s lost their third starting pitcher to injury as Ladner’s James Paxton was placed on the 10-day disabled list with what the club is calling a strained forearm.
Paxton joins Felix Hernandez and Drew Smyly on the early season injury list.
Smyly is on the 60-day DL with a strained elbow while Hernandez is expected to miss several more weeks with bursitis in his shoulder.
According to the Mariners, the extent of Paxton's injury is not yet known, but it's not believed to be too serious.
The Ladner lefty started the season on fire with a 3-0 record and a paltry 1.43 ERA. He opened the season with 23 straight shutout innings the longest such streak since Mark Lowe, who pitched 17.2 scoreless innings, to start the 2006 campaign.
In his last outing on Tuesday, Paxton gave up two runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts leaving with a 2-1 lead in the sixth, which was given up by the bullpen in a 6-4 extra innings loss to the Anaheim Angels.
Seattle sits third in the AL West with a 13-16 record and are six games behind the first-place Houston Astros.
The Mariners play host to Texas this weekend at Safeco Field.
