In a game that had no significant meaning in the standings with South Delta already having clinched second in their conference the senior varsity Sun Devils rolled to a 32-2 win over Handsworth last Friday on the North Shore.
South Delta finished with a 9-1 overall record and 5-1 in conference play with their only loss coming on the road to Vancouver College.
Van College as the number one seed and South Delta as the number two seed, both get a bye this week in the first round of the playoffs.
Next week, South Delta will play the winner of the seven vs 10 seed game between Rutland and Terry Fox.
A day, time and location of that South Delta game is TBA.
In the win over Handsworth, South Delta welcomed back Hudson Wight to the line-up as he returned from a bad break in his leg playing basketball.
A team captain and emotional leader even when not on the field, it was special to see him get back out there and lead the team in tackles.
South Delta came out with great energy and were able to take control early with a quick stop on defence and within a few plays, it was Damian Dumas taking one of his carries for a 40-yard touchdown. He would end the day with 70 yards rushing and two TDs.
Quite quickly it became 16-0 after a Dominic Dumas pass to Quinn Sjoberg found the endzone from 30 yards out.
Another Damian TD started the second quarter with his brother Dominic not wanting to be out done by his little brother and scrambling for a 75-yard TD to end the half up 29-0.
“It was a great team effort today,” said head coach Ray Moon. “It was clear from the onset that we were a stronger team, and it enabled us to get our less experienced guys in for some meaningful reps. It was great to see the excitement that team had for their teammates having success on the field. The guys have been really working hard to make our scout team as close to the opposition as possible, so it was nice to get them as much playing time as they did.”
Junior Varsity
The JV Sun Devils have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
South Delta will play the winner of the Centennial/Sardis game likely on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Minoru Park in Richmond.
