PHOTOS: Islanders drop close one to Poco Saints

Two late goals prove to be Delta’s undoing

Two late goals sent the Delta Islanders to their fourth loss in six games Saturday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

But the loss was not due to lack of effort in the 12-10 final against the Poco Saints in BC Junior “A” lacrosse league action.

The game was a spirited, back-and-forth affair.

The Saints led 5-4 after the first and 9-7 after two.

In the third period, Poco took a 10-7 lead four minutes into the period, but the Islanders fought back to tie the score only to see the Saints score a power play goal with 39 seconds left, followed by an empty net goal to take home the win.

The Islanders were led by Silas Richmond with three goals, while Turner Anderson scored twice and added three assists.

Other goal scorers included Reece Young, Scott Williams, Blake Young, Sam Strother and Austin Lamoureux.

The evening game capped off a day in honour of Thomas Haydon.

Haydon was a Ladner resident and Delta firefighter who lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2018 at the age of 36, leaving behind his young family. He was also a big part of the lacrosse community as a player and a coach.

In his honour, the Thomas Haydon Memorial Game and Award was launched in 2019. The fundraiser sees his former teammates and friends get together for a fun alumni game and social before presenting the award and bursary to a member of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. Haydon was the first-ever captain of the Islanders.

This year’s Haydon award was presented to Noah Wickett.

Last Thursday night (June 6), nine different players found the back of the net as the Islanders were 16-6 winners over the Langley Thunder.

Lamoureux led the Islanders offence with four goals and two assists and Williams had a hat trick and six points. Delta scored four times while short-handed.

Delta’s Noah Dibattista made 41 saves at the other end of the floor.

The Islanders are back at home on Saturday, June 15 as they host the Thunder. Game time is 7 p.m.
