The South Delta Sun Devils Grade 8 girls basketball team takes momentum into this week’s Delta Championships after capturing its second tournament of the season.

The Sun Devils defeated cross-town rival Seaquam 53-22 in the title game at the Clayton Heights tournament.

Sophie Gower was named the player of the game in the tourney final with 10 points while Makena Rutledge had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Jane McDonald was named the player of the game in the Sun Devils first game against CG Howe. She had 12 points.

Olivia Barber was the player of the game against Yorkson Creek. She had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

South Delta’s first tournament win of the season came in December when they beat Yorkson Creek in the title of the North Delta tournament.

Their overall record is an outstanding 24-1, with the lone loss coming against McMath in November when they were missing three of their starters due to injury.

“The girls play team first basketball, always making the extra pass, play stifling defence and have balanced team scoring,” said Sharon Butler who coaches the girls along with Christine Young. “The team is full of athletes and half of them play high level soccer. They are fast and aggressive. All but one player came up through the South Delta Steve Nash league, which continues to promote the love of basketball and good fundamentals throughout Delta.”

Of special note was a tribute the team did for the tournament.

Following the tragic loss of their fellow student Kyle Losse, the players all wore KL14 on their jerseys.

The Sun Devils will now turn their attention to Saturday's Delta Championship game where they will face their cross-town rival Delta Pacers at 9 a.m. South Delta has gone undefeated in district play, while the Pacers got past Seaquam 30-25 Wednesday to secure their spot in the final. Marley Day poured in 19 for the Ladner school.

The team includes: Andie Assaly, Amy Jones, Amy Smith, Brianna Jassmann, Heidi Leigh, Jane McDonald, Kate McDonald, Maegan Singh, Makena Rutledge, Olivia Barber, Sophie Gower and Teila Noble.
