It was just like old times for the South Delta Sun Devils at Dennison Park and they hope it continues that way.
South Delta kicked off the B.C. High School Football senior varsity season with a 37-0 win over the Terry Fox Ravens on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Sun Devils are playing all their home games across the street due to the track renovations at the SDSS Oval. The last time they did that they went undefeated at home en route to winning their first-ever B.C. AAA championship.
Ben McDonald wasted little time in showing why he is arguably the top quarterback in the province, tossing five touchdown passes and running 20-yards for another. He hit Rhys Porteous on strikes of five and 15-yards.
The others came on tosses of five and 20 yards to Jackson Baillie and Evan Paterson respectively.
Ethan Troniak and Paterson also hauled in two-point conversion passes while Adam Hoegg ran in another. The Grade 11 middle linebacker also led his team in tackles.
The Sun Devils now turn their attention to the annual Delta Cup battle when they head to Sunshine Hills on Saturday to take on the Seaquam Seahawks.
The teams have split their last two meetings, including a 6-3 South Delta win a year ago on a late unconverted touchdown.
The Seahawks opened the season south of the border last Friday night with a 29-14 loss at Oak Harbour, WA.
The city rivals no longer play in the same conference with Seaquam moving from the West to the East this season.

Even with a limited roster, the Sun Devils junior varsity team opened its season last Wednesday with a big 30-22 win over the New West Hyacks.
