My wife and I are ardent play enthusiasts and see a lot of plays of varying price ranges. We saw Shrek the Musical, done by the students of South Delta Secondary, and consider the $15 ticket price money well spent.
We have never had so much fun at a play than what these performers delivered. If you weren't smiling in amazement, you were gut wrenching in laughter. Our faces hurt by the end because of all the laughter.
Shrek, the poor Ogre who was kicked out of his home at the age of seven, was brilliant. Donkey helped him throughout the mission and was hilarious, while Lord Farquaad never left his role even when he was in the background making hilarious facial and body movements.
There were so many funny characters that I keep suddenly thinking of - Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, Three Blind Mice, Gingy, The Gay Wolf and especially the three Princess Fionas, each with fabulous voices - even though it's been more than a week since we saw the play.
My hat is off to the performers but I would be remiss if I didn't thank and congratulate the whole production crew, orchestra and, of course, the teachers of South Delta Secondary.
Art is the cornerstone of civilization. I hope our trustees remember that when they are doing budgets and ensure these young folk will be able to continue to develop their skills and talents.
