Genesis Theatre is getting set to open its new season with an amazing line-up of talent from inside and outside the community.
The theatre located inside Delta Secondary produces a few concerts each year, bringing renowned B.C. musical artists to South Delta.
Two Vancouver music legends have been confirmed for this fall.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues come to Ladner for a 7:30 p.m. show.
For more than four decades, they have been Canada’s leading blues band with hit songs including Doin’ It Right On the Wrong Side of Town and Boppin With the Blues. The band’s highlights include winning a Juno, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival, and touring with legends like John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Two weeks later, Jim Byrnes comes to town on Saturday, Oct. 19 for a 7:30 p.m. show.
For nearly 50 years, Byrnes has crooned, drawled, belted, hollered and sweet-talked more songs into a microphone than most people ever get to hear in a lifetime.
His music has won multiple awards, including three Junos, and his previous concerts at Genesis Theatre have been very popular.

Other shows also on the schedule include: Eli Williams at Elvis Live on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

Relive the music of the 1950s and ’60s at a rock ‘n’ roll show on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The show takes the audience on a musical journey with hits by Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, The Supremes, Neil Diamond and more.

Then from Nov. 29 to Dec. 8, Delta Youth Theatre presents Frozen Jr.Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, the show brings Elsa, Anna and the magical land of Arendelle to life.

“After Christmas, I’m hoping to add at least one more show from our end,” said Ray Weremczuk from the Delta School District. “Once we get into February, then Delta Secondary has its production and then after that we have other community groups who will be taking over the stage with other theatre and dance productions.”
That mix of quality outside acts and community groups is what makes Genesis Theatre such a unique venue and one the community really embraces, Weremczuk said.
“I’m hoping that’s the case. There is no pressure from the school board for us to bring in these acts, but the community really loves the quality that we can attract,” he said. “We are one of the few theatres where people can just walk down the block and see someone like a Jim Byrnes. Obviously the local theatre and dance groups need the space and need a longer time in the theatre and we’re happy that we can provide them with that venue.”
