Editor’s note: In cooperation with Delta Police, the Crime Beat feature is changing a bit.

Moving forward, Delta Police will be outlining their calls for service in the community as well, highlighting an issue or issues of concern for residents, along with tips for the public when appropriate to the highlighted topic. This week, DPD is putting the spotlight on crypto frauds.

Here is your DPD snapshot for the week of March 7 - 13, 2022.

Number of completed calls: 535

Number of General Occurrence Reports Created: 452

False/Abandoned 911 calls: 63

Assist Public: 72

Collisions: 21

B&E: 5

Fraud: 6

The DPD continues to receive reports from Delta residents who have been defrauded while attempting to invest in cryptocurrencies.

In most cases, victims are either contacted by suspects via social media or respond to online advertisements promising large returns on investments. As the victim invests, the suspect shows them fake evidence of their investment earnings, leading the victim to invest more. However, once the victim tries to withdraw their gains, the suspect requests huge withdrawal fees or stops communication entirely.

Recent files include a Delta resident who lost over $230,000 US dollars to this scam and another who lost over $20,000 US dollars
