Delta residents want neighbourhood covered shelter

City staff did not support the request

Coun. Jessie Dosanjh agreed a neighbourhood covered shelter can improve the quality of life for residents, especially seniors.

It’s a much-needed amenity, especially for local seniors.

That’s what Coun. Jessie Dosanjh said regarding a letter to council requesting the construction of a covered shelter for the neighbourhood in the vicinity of 11531 80th Avenue in North Delta.

That happens to be the address of McCloskey Elementary, property owned by the Delta School District.

The letter from the resident, attached with a petition, says the area currently lacks a proper shelter where senior community members can gather, socialize and engage in cultural activities, noting the proposed location is central to the community and easily accessible to residents.

A shelter is envisioned like the one at Delview Park on 92nd Avenue.

A staff response notes the proposed location is on school district and BC Hydro properties, so the request will be forwarded to them for consideration.

Staff will also inform the resident of a new covered viewing/gathering facility that is available at the North Delta Secondary property that was completed in 2022 as part of the new track project.

Staff also noted that the city has no plans to add a shelter in the 80th Avenue and 116th Street area.

However, Dosanjh asked his fellow councillors at their Sept. 9 meeting to refer the request to the Delta council/Delta Board of Education Liaison Committee.

That motion was endorsed, and the request will be discussed at a future meeting of that committee.
