The former BC United candidate for Delta North says he is not endorsing any party or leader, during the Oct. 19 provincial election.
In a statement Sept. 9, Amrit Dhot said he’s a long-time BC Liberal supporter and that he doesn’t share incumbent NDP candidate Ravi Kahlon’s views or those of the B.C. NDP or Premier David Eby.
However, he said, “he has respect for Kahlon, solely because he is the only candidate running to represent the riding . . . which he’s a resident of, like Dhot himself.”
The NDP announced on Monday that Dhot had endorsed Kahlon, with Kahlon saying, “I wholeheartedly appreciate Amrit’s endorsement.”
The party also included a photo of Dhot and Kahlon.
But Dhot said later Monday night that he didn’t approve the NDP statement and that he gave his own statement to Kahlon and his manager saying that he supported Kahlon because he was a local resident, rather than endorsing any party or leader.
He reiterated that he does not endorse the BC NDP or Premier David Eby, but supports a candidate who understands and resides within North Delta.
Dhot added that he’s decided to suspend his campaign, “and focus on his family and community service.”
BC United leader Kevin Falcon announced Aug. 28 that he was suspending the party’s campaign and asked members to support the BC Conservatives and defeat the NDP.
As a result, some candidates were asked by the BC Conservatives to run for the party while others retired and some will run as independents.
“While he steps back from electoral politics, this is not the end of his commitment to helping others,” Dhot said, adding he remains dedicated to supporting his community and “contributing to its well-being in meaningful ways.”
