Tsawwassen's Madeleine Dion Stout was appointed to the Order of Canada last week for "contributing to the development of Aboriginal health care in Canada as a nurse, researcher and advocate."
Dion Stout was one of 100 appointments made last Wednesday by Governor General David Johnston.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Dion Stout, who is an honourary professor at the UBC School of Nursing, has received honourary doctorates from Carleton University, UBC and the University of Ottawa.
A post on the UBC nursing website notes she is a long-time advocate for First Nations, Inuit, and Metis health and education, and is a past president of the Aboriginal Nurses Association.
The Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours, was established
in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service.
