North Delta Crime Beat: $12,000 lost in vehicle and home break-in

Files of interest for this week from Delta Police.

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *July 25, 9000 Block Hardy Road: Complainant reported break and enter at their residence, noticing their vehicle lock had been broken, a passport, and new inverter stolen from vehicle. Unknown suspects used the electronic garage key located in vehicle to access garage, and steal set of golf clubs, bicycle and three totes full of tools. Total loss valued at approximately $12,000. No evidence to indicate that the main portion of the residence was accessed. Break and enter believed to have taken place overnight. File under investigation.

*July 25, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they were the victim of an online scam after using a link they believed to be booking.com, to book flights with an approximate value of $10,000. Complainant advised they called the number on the fraudulent website and spoke to an unknown suspect who advised there was a promotion with Apple, and to purchase $3,000 in gift cards to pay for the flights.  Complainant then purchased the gift cards as requested and forwarded serial numbers, along with their credit card details. Complainant reported the incident to Apple who advised they will be investigating the fraud and contacted their financial institution to cancel their credit card. Police discussed mitigation strategies with complainant who was encouraged to book future flights through a travel agent and block unknown suspect’s phone number.

*July 26, 11500 Block of 96th Avenue: Complainant reported theft of their vehicle – a black Honda Accord - sometime overnight, outside their residence. Two pairs of sunglasses valued at $500 were the only items inside vehicle. Vehicle was valued at $2,000. CCTV canvass negative, no witnesses/suspects, vehicle added to stolen vehicle database.

*July 28, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported being the victim of a gift card fraud, after attempting to contact Amazon customer support, and being put in touch with an unknown male who directed them to purchase $900 worth of gift cards and provide the numbers over the phone once purchased. The complainant provided a list of the fraudulent contact numbers and was advised by police to report the fraud to their financial institution.

*July 29, 11400 Block 84th Avenue: Complainant reported, after returning to their vehicle parked at the back of a parking lot at the North Delta Rec Centre, they noticed two four to six -inch scratches on the rear trunk. Complainant believed this was vandalism and wished for a review of CCTV footage in the lot. Police to follow up for video surveillance.
