The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest.

Here is a snapshot of some of the police files for this week:
Feb. 15, 05:30 a.m., 8500 block of 120 Street: Police were dispatched to a mischief in progress after the caller observed someone smash a car window and pour accelerant into it before leaving on foot. Police were provided a description of the individual, and direction of travel, before locating them in a nearby business. Police identified and arrested the suspect, who was also found to be breaching their release conditions. Police transported them to Surrey cells.
Feb. 17, 9:50 a.m., 8000 block of 120 Street: Police conducted a traffic stop on a reckless driver speeding through parking lots and driving into oncoming traffic. Upon identifying the driver, police arrested them for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Police also noted cannabis in view, and indicators of impairment. Police read the driver the Standard Field Sobriety Test Demand, to which the driver performed poorly. The driver was later issued a 90-day Administrative Driving Prohibition and court date for impaired driving after refusing to provide a sample for analysis.
Feb. 18, 700 block of Hampstead Close: Police were dispatched to a reported theft of auto, after staff reported a five-tonne freightliner had been stolen sometime overnight. Broken glass was located at the passenger side of where the vehicle was last parked, and CCTV footage is pending for police review.
Feb. 18, Highway 91/72 Avenue overpass: Police were dispatched to a reported distressed person on the highway overpass watching traffic from the guardrail. Police located the individual, and identified them as a high risk missing person out of Burnaby, suffering from paranoid delusions. Police safely apprehended them under Sec. 28 of the Mental Health Act and transported them to hospital where Burnaby RCMP assumed custody.
Feb. 18, 7:54 p.m., 8100 block of 120 Street: Police were dispatched to a local business after three people refused to leave the property upon being asked by staff repeatedly. Police located the group, identified each of them, and found one to be in breach of an existing court order not to be found at that business. Police arrested them on the breach order, and subsequently located weapons and suspected narcotics on their person.
Feb. 19, 10:50 p.m., 11900 block of 86 Avenue: Police conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety, and after identifying the driver, read them the Approved Screening Device (ASD) Demand. The driver’s breath sample resulted in a “FAIL” reading, and they were issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) and had their vehicle towed for the mandatory 30-day period.
Feb. 20, 11:02 p.m., 8800 block of 120 Street: Police conducted a traffic stop, and upon confirming the driver’s identification, found them to be prohibited from driving. While arresting the driver, police detected the distinct odour of liquor, and read them the ASD Demand. The driver’s breath sample resulted in a “WARN” reading, and they were issued a three-day IRP and had their vehicle towed.
