The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
*Feb. 3, 1:06 p.m., 5800 block Highway 91: Complainant reported a vehicle in the ditch and spoke to the driver who advised he was not injured and was calling a tow truck. Police attended and located the driver standing nearby, who informed police that he had been driving and that he had consumed alcohol. Police formed suspicion and read an Approved Screening Device Demand. Two breath samples were taken, both resulting in a "FAIL". The vehicle was recovered from the ditch and towed. Police served an Immediate Roadside Prohibition to the driver and seized the driver’s license.
*Feb. 5, 10:11 a.m., 500 Ebury Place: Complainant reported that the same male from a previous file had parked his vehicle on the grass in front of their business. The complainant advised that this was an ongoing issue with the male refusing to park in the parking lot. Police attended and spoke with the driver, who agreed to move his vehicle. Police requested that the driver park in a legal parking spot if he continues to fish along the river to prevent future incidents with the businesses. The driver agreed and moved his vehicle to a legal spot in the parking lot. Police also advised the driver that he could potentially be issued a violation ticket if police are contacted in the future.
*Feb. 5, 7:40 p.m., 11400 block 87 Avenue: Complainant reported a suspicious group of youth holding flashlights and a baseball bat in the backyard at a neighbouring residence. The complainant was concerned as the residence was a rental property and believed it to be vacant. Police attended and spoke with the owner, who advised she recently moved into the property. The owner was apologetic as she had asked her sons to break apart unwanted items in the backyard for disposal. Police determined the event to be non-suspicious and contacted the complainant to advise her of the circumstances.
*Feb. 6, 12:17 a.m., 9000 block Hayward Place: Complainant reported hearing several voices yelling and screaming in the area. Police attended a nearby park and located a group of youth drinking in the outdoor rink. Police requested the parties to dispose of any open alcoholic beverages at the scene. Police used discretion and did not issue any violation tickets due to cooperation of the group. All parties vacated the area upon request without issue.
*Feb. 6, 4:14 p.m., 7300 block 120th Street: Police conducted a routine search of a vehicle and it revealed that the registered owner was unlicensed. Police initiated a traffic stop, where the driver provided a driver’s license from another country. Inspection of the license revealed it to be a forged document. The license was a photocopy, glued to a card that had then been laminated. All other markers to determine authenticity were absent as well. Police seized the license and issued the driver a violation ticket for not having a driver’s license. ICBC was advised of the fraudulent license and the driver had a friend attend to drive his car home.
*Feb. 6, 5:43 p.m., Location withheld: Complainant reported an ongoing dispute with her neighbour. The complainant stated that the neighbour parks his vehicle on the street in front of his house, but becomes extremely irritated when other neighbours park in the same spot. Today, the complainant had a friend intended to drop something off and the neighbour observed the friend park on the street, and exited his house to yell at the friend. Police attended and informed residents that that street parking is available to the public.
*Feb. 7, 9:14 a.m., 11800 block 120th Street: Police conducting routine enforcement stopped a vehicle and learned the owner has had a cancelled driver’s license since 2017. As there was an indication of alcohol consumption, an Approved Screening Device demand was read. The driver unequivocally refused to provide a breath sample even after police explained multiple times the consequences for refusing a lawful demand. Police issued the driver a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for no driver’s license and sent on his way.
*Feb. 7, 4:45 p.m., 8400 block 120th Street: A staff member at a local business reported that a male was refusing to pay for services. The complaint advised that she was withholding belongings due to this. Police attended and determined that the male was willing to pay full price, however was disappointed with unsatisfactory service. The male paid full price and the complainant returned his items. Police determined that this was a customer service issue only.
