North Delta Crime Beat: Thief jumps into open and running vehicle then crashes car

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. July 7, 8800 Block Brooke Road: Complainant filed a report for the theft of three Amazon packages valued at $400 from their residence. The unknown female suspect jumped out of a Grey Hyundai SUV with an unknown male driver, grabbed the packages and drove off.  Images of suspects and vehicle were uploaded for identification purposes.

July 23, 800 Block Belgrave Way: Complainant reported the theft of 11 propane tanks from a local business. Unknown person(s) cut through two sets of locks to remove tanks. Police found one of the cut off locks, which was seized for examination of prints. New CCTV cameras to be installed.

July 24, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported being the victim of fraud after sending $8,810 to an unknown person they believed to be their son. Complainant received a text message claiming their son had received a new phone and new number as the old phone broke, and requested the complainant send $2,910 from Scotiabank to a fraudulent email address, and two transactions of $3,000 and $2,900 from Vancity to another fraudulent email address. Complainant contacted the financial institutions who were unable to reverse the transactions.

July 25, 800 Block Cliveden Place: Complainant reported the front passenger window of their company vehicle had been broken and various tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and drills, stolen while the vehicle was parked in the company parking lot. Approximate value of items stolen $2,000.

July 26, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they were the victim of fraud after sending a $500 deposit to rent a basement suite through Facebook. Once the initial deposits was sent via email, additional funds were requested, which the complainant refused to send. Complainant was then blocked by the unknown suspect. Police attended the address of the rental suite and spoke to homeowners who advised their address has been used for this same scam before as well as many of their neighbors. Police helped complainant report the Facebook account as fraudulent.

July 27, 9200 Block 120th Street: Complainant reported the theft of their vehicle that was left unattended and running. Complainant was briefly away from the vehicle when and an unknown male jumped in and drove off, dropping a can of bear spray while getting into the car. The stolen vehicle was later involved in a collision with a parked vehicle, unable to track suspect. Police located a black mask near the collision scene. Mask and bear spray seized for processing, vehicle towed and secured for prints.

July 28, 7100 Block 120th Street: Complainant reported the theft of approximately $200 worth of goods from a local business. Police located the suspect at a nearby bus stop who was in possession of the stolen goods. No charges were requested, and the suspect was given a lifetime ban from the business. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the business.
