The City of Delta is looking at two possible scenarios for a new track facility in North Delta.

At this month’s Delta council/Delta board of education liaison committee meeting at city hall, parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz outlined scenarios if a grant application was approved and if it was rejected.

If the application for funding from seniors governments is approved, a competition-level track and field facility would be constructed at North Delta Secondary. The cost would be in the millions.

If the application is not approved, the existing track would be improved with a new surface and drainage. Costs for that lesser option are estimated to be less than $1 million.

Meanwhile, a draft joint use agreement has been developed for the refurbished track at South Delta Secondary. It was noted that it would be valuable to have signage installed identifying the facility as a community track and information on how to book it.

This summer, the city agreed to cover 50 per cent of the cost, up to a maximum of $175,000, to resurface the track at the Tsawwassen high school.
