The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN:
*March 3, 11:03 a.m., 5000 Canoe Pass Way: Police received a driving and road rage complaint. Driver one wanted to make the right hand turn to go north on 52nd Street. Driver one cut off driver two in the process. Driver two was upset as he was nearly run off the road and vocalized his frustration. Driver one proceeded to raise his middle finger at driver two and vocalize his point of view. Both vehicles entered the Tsawwassen Mills parking lot. Driver one called police as he thought driver two was following him. Police spoke to both parties and advised them on better behavior.
*March 3, 1:22 a.m., 56thStreet and Highway 17: Police officer observed a vehicle turning eastbound on Highway 17 while the light was red. There are posted signs at the intersection stating that vehicles are not to turn on a red light. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and while speaking with the driver, detected a strong odour of alcohol emanating from the breath of the driver. Approved screening device was administered two times, both results were a fail. Driver served immediate roadside prohibition and vehicle towed. Driver called a taxi.
*March 5, 10:16 a.m., 4900-block 56th Avenue: Complainant attended Delta police headquarters to report her vehicle had been broken into overnight at her residence. The complainant advised that she had left the vehicle unlocked and that there were no signs of forced entry or damage to the vehicle. She reported that only loose change had been taken and vehicle had been rummaged through.
*March 6, 4:53 p.m., 5500-block of 4th Avenue: Complainant reported that she found her quarterly subscription magazine missing from within its plastic shipping wrap. Canada Post delivered it to her mailbox as normal, however the plastic wrapping had either been cut or torn open and only the plastic addressed cover and the white paper protector sheets were delivered. It cannot be confirmed if was taken from her mailbox or was delivered as such. The complainant advised she will speak to Canada Post and also post on Facebook.
*March 8, 5:13 p.m., 12A Street and English Bluff Road: Complainant called police to report a speeding pickup truck. The complainant observed the truck speeding southbound on English Bluff Road, and “gunning it.” Registered owner denied being in the area at that time when contacted by police, however, was given verbal warning anyway to slow down and respect speed limits in the area.
LADNER:
*March 3, 8:10 p.m., 4900-block of 42B Avenue: Complainant called police to report a sports equipment storage building was insecure. Police attended to find the door open, lights on, and no way to secure the building. The building did not appear to be broken into. The City of Delta were notified and attended to secure the building.
*March 4, 10:16 a.m., 5700-block of 48B Avenue: Complainant attended Delta police headquarters to report that he had received a phone call and letter from a credit union advising that he had an outstanding charge for a cell phone valued at $792. The complainant advised police he has a different cell provider, and no one else in his household had made the phone purchase. Investigation is ongoing.
*March 5, 5:29 p.m., 5600-block of 48B Avenue: Complainant reported sometime overnight someone had entered her vehicle parked outside her residence. The complainant advised that she had left the vehicle unlocked and that there were no signs of forced entry or damage to the vehicle, and that nothing was stolen from the vehicle. Police reminded complainant to lock her vehicle and not to leave valuables inside.
*March 7, 2:00 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A DPD officer was approached by a complainant who advised a male appeared to be slumped over at the nearby bus stop. Police approached the male who was asleep while standing at the bus stop. The male advised he was “resting his eyes” and waiting for the bus as he was on his way to New West. The male was sent on his way as he was not committing an offence.
*March 7, 11:33 p.m., 4500-block of Evergreen Lane: Complainant called police to report a group of five to six youths in the rear parking lot of a property. On police arrival the group was dispersing. Police spoke with a youth from the group and they were advised not to attend the area as it was private property. The youth understood and agreed not to return.
*March 8, 4:53 p.m., 5300-block of Central Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone had attempted to break into his vehicle. Upon arrival the complainant showed police that the front driver side door keyhole had been damaged. The complainant reported that the suspect did not gain entry to his vehicle. The complainant was advised to contact ICBC with police file number for claim.
*March 9, 1 a.m., 47-block of 54A Street: Police officer conducted a traffic stop. When questioned, the driver admitted to having three to four drinks prior to driving. Approved screening device was administered two times, both results were “warn.” Driver served three-day immediate roadside prohibition and vehicle towed. Officer drove driver home.
*March 9, 9:11 a.m., 4600-block 54A Street: Complainant reported a theft that occurred at her residence. The complainant reported to police that a two-foot-tall Buddha statue was stolen from her front lawn. Statue is described as being made of cement, painted yellow except one arm, wearing pink slippers and a blue robe. The complainant advised she wanted the incident documented should similar events be reported in her neighbourhood, and did not request further police investigation.
*March 9, 8:49 p.m., 4900-block 52A Street: An anonymous complainant reported a loud house party in the area. Police attended the area and located the party. Police observed several unsupervised minors consuming alcohol. Police shut down the party and informed all parties to vacate the area. Police remained on scene until the arrival of property owner who advised that she was aware there was a party occurring at her residence, however was unaware of the noise. Police warned the property owner on Delta bylaws regarding excessive noise.
