The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
*Dec. 1, 1:05 p.m., 3500 Block of Highway 17: Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling 134 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The driver was served a ticket for excessive speed, and a mandatory seven-day notice of impoundment on their vehicle.
*Dec. 3, 11 a.m., 1900 block 56 Street: Police were dispatched to a reported theft of bicycle, with an estimated value of $1,200, after it was left unsecured at a nearby business. A suspect description was provided to police.
*Dec. 4, various locations and times in Delta: Police conducted Counterattack sobriety checks in partnership with ICBC, leading to more than 450 vehicle checks. In addition, Delta Police officers on patrol and Counterattack duties issued four Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRP). With the holiday season upon us, police are urging everyone to plan ahead for a safe ride home from celebrations with friends, family and colleagues.
Ladner
*Dec. 1, 5800 block Mountain View Boulevard: Police were called to assist with an elderly resident assaulting staff. Under Section 28 of the Mental Health Act, police apprehended the resident without issue, and transported them to Surrey Memorial Hospital for the medical care they needed.
*Dec. 2, 4400 block Maple Lane: Police conducted a traffic stop after observing dangerous driving behaviour and detected an odour of liquor on the breath of the driver during identification. Police subsequently read them a breath demand, and the driver refused to exit their vehicle to comply with the lawful demand. Police subsequently served the driver a 90-day IRP for their “refusal” and mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment notice.
*Dec. 4, 9:03 a.m., 11200 block of 52A Street: Police were dispatched to a reported break and enter after a homeowner noted multiple tools and truck tires were stolen from their garage overnight. The homeowner advised they had gone to bed and forgot to close the garage door.
*Dec. 4, 10:35 p.m., 1900 Block Westminster Avenue: Police were dispatched to a group of 30-plus youth in Lions Park who were observed drinking, yelling, and vandalizing the property. Upon arrival, the group had fled, and police observed numerous garbage cans had been overturned, and broken glass was left near the children's play area. Police cleaned up the glass to ensure it was safe for children to play the following day.
