Another bitcoin fraud results in loss of $8,000

Sept. 3, 4900 Block Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported the theft of a laptop valued at $1,100 from a local business. Police attended and spoke with the manager who advised the unknown male was interested in a laptop which was removed from the secure case and placed behind the counter by an employee. The unknown male then requested a chair and as the employee was getting the chair, the unknown male went behind the counter, took the laptop and ran from the business on foot. The unknown suspect is described as South Asian, approximately 5’9”, with black curly hair, wearing a light blue hoody, grey shorts and black sneakers. Patrols of the areas proved negative, while CCTV and photos were provided for identification of suspect.

Sept. 5, Ferry Causeway: Complainant reported a possible impaired driver waiting to board the ferry. Police attended and spoke with the driver who was sitting in the driver’s seat. An open can of liquor was observed in the centre console of the vehicle. Multiple breath samples were provided resulting in a failure reading. The driver’s license was seized, a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was issued, the vehicle was towed and impounded for 30-days. The driver left the area on foot.

Sept. 7, 1200 Block 56th Avenue: Police initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle leave a parking lot with no lights on. The driver had a class 7 license and admitted to consuming alcohol. The driver provided two breath samples resulting in failure readings. A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was issued, the vehicle was towed and impounded for 30-days. The driver was driven home by a friend.

Sept. 7, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way: Complainant reported being the victim of fraud after losing $8,000 to an unknown male caller who identified themselves as “RBC cyber security”. The complainant provided their banking information to the caller after they were told there had been suspicious transactions from their account. The complainant has advised RBC, Equifax, and Transunion of fraudulent activity.

Sept. 8, 5000 Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported the theft of multiple items from their vehicle while parked at a local business. Complainant advised when they returned to their vehicle, they noticed the rear hatch was open, and upon further inspection noticed the theft of a camping tent, Ray ban sunglasses, perfume, Guess handbag, a dash camera, Kate Spade leather bag, change and miscellaneous kids’ Ikea items. Value of stolen items worth approximately $1,000.

Sept. 3, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way: Complainant reported being the victim of fraud after depositing $8,000 cash and $1,000 from their credit card into a bitcoin machine. Complainant was contacted by an unknown male claiming to be from the RBC Fraud department who advised they noticed a fraudulent charge on their eBay account, and an attempt to take out bitcoin from the complainant’s RRSP account. The unknown male caller asked complainant for their help in stopping the fraud by depositing cash into a bitcoin machine using a QR code. The complainant had notified their bank of the fraudulent transaction, and provided the transaction details to police for tracking it was determined the transactions are based out of the Seychelles and linked to China.

Sept. 5, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way: Complainant reported being the victim of fraud after receiving a notification to purchase an iPhone for $2,295 on their Visa card. Complainant immediately contacted Visa and notified them the purchase was fraudulent and cancelled their credit card. The complainant also notified Apple, who cancelled the order transaction. Police advised complainant to contact Equifax to ensure there were no further fraudulent activities in their name. The fraud was reported to Police for file number.

Sept. 6, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way: Complainant called to report that their unlocked vehicles had been entered sometime overnight, while parked in the driveway of the residence. Approximately $90 was taken from both vehicles and the glove box was rummaged through. No CCTV was observed in the area.

Sept. 6, 6500 Block Highway 17: Police conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle accelerated past a police vehicle at 133km/hr in an 80km/hr zone.  The driver was charged with excessive speed, the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Sept. 6, 4500 Block 55B Street: Complainant reported observing an unknown male enter their unlocked vehicle while parked in the driveway of the residence. Missing from the vehicle is a silver iPod, headphones, sunglasses, cleaning supplies and a set of keys for the complainant’s work. The unknown male was wearing a hoodie, long pants and carrying a backpack.
