Ice Hawks look to return to winning ways

Delta suffers rare back-to-back losses to North Van and Ridge Meadows

Delta Ice Hawks Alex Suprynowicz is sent sprawling during Tuesday night's 4-3 overtime loss to Ridge Meadows in Ladner.

The Delta Ice Hawks will head into Abbotsford on Friday night in unfamiliar territory.

The Hawks will be looking to snap a rare two-game losing streak when they take on the Pilots. Delta dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Ridge Meadows Flames on Tuesday night and that result came on the heels of a 5-4 defeat to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack last Saturday.

Four regulars from last season’s championship team — Daniel Rubin, Nathan Pelletier, Nick Marsh and goaltender Jordy Engelson — were out of the line-up Tuesday but head coach Steve Robinson is not looking for any excuses. He sees a team that is making too many self inflicted wounds of late.

The Hawks now sit at 2-1-1-1 on the season.

“There is some good stuff going on but obviously lots of things where we are getting in our own way and turning over the puck. When you look at that game there was more than enough chances to score. We just have clean a little bit of our business and it’s not like we are far away,” said Robinson.

“In the big picture you have to look at that it’s part of what we need to go through to play honest. You just can’t show up and, based on the talent on your roster, that teams are going to just roll over for us. They want to knock us off and we’re going to get a team’s best punch.

“Right now our attention to detail on the little stuff isn’t as good as it needs to be.”

Former Hawk Teddy Prior took advantage of a turnover to notch the game winner 1:23 into overtime. Captain Jordan Deyrmenjian, Max Daerendinger and rookie Jordin Kojima had the Delta goals.

Recently required forward Andrew Kemp assisted on Daerendinger’s tally in his Ice Hawks debut.  The Richmond native was picked up in a trade with North Vancouver after playing for Robinson with the Sockeyes last season.

Delta also hosts Port Moody on Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m.
