North Delta Crime Beat: Police investigating several frauds and thefts

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest.

Jan. 1, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant contacted a company they found on Instagram which advertised discounted flights to India. After purchasing a ticket for $1,600 through a one-time link, the complainant found they were the victim of fraud. Complainant has made a claim to their credit card company for the return of the funds. Police ran queries of phone numbers with negative results.

Jan. 3, 7500 Block of Minster Drive: Police received a report of a vehicle parked in the area with two occupants, who were going through backpacks. A query of the license plate indicated the vehicle was stolen. Police attended and arrested the driver for possession of stolen property. Both suspects were transported to cells to be held for a bail hearing. The vehicle was towed from the scene for processing.

Jan. 4, 7000 Block of 120th Street: Complainant reported their $900, yellow/teal, Trek Marline 5 mountain bike stolen from the mall. The bicycle was left locked in the bike rack for several hours. The lock was cut. Mall security video to be examined for possible identification of a suspect.

Jan. 5, 7300 Block of 120th Street: A business reported a male stole a Breville coffee maker valued at $999. Surveillance video identified the suspect who was arrested by police and charged with theft.

Jan. 6, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they received a scam phone call from a female, who indicated there was suspicious activity on the complainant’s bank account. The call was transferred to a male who directed the complainant to deposit $9,500 in a Bitcoin ATM, and to purchase $2,500 in Apple gifts cards, and provide the caller with the codes. The complainant complied with both requests, and as a result a loss of $12,000 was incurred. The fraud was reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the bank which is in the process of reimbursing some of the funds. 

Jan. 7, 8600 Block of 119th Street: Complainant reported they found their parked vehicle with the passenger side door open, and the door keyed. The vehicle had been rummaged throughout, and there was a small amount of blood on the driver’s seat. Identification services attended the scene and retrieved blood samples for processing. Investigation to continue.

Jan. 6, 119 Street & 88th Avenue: Police observed a vehicle failing to stop at a four-way stop. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver admitted to consuming alcohol. The driver provided one breath sample but refused to provide a second sample and requested access to counsel. The driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
