North Delta Crime Beat: Resident loses $5,000 in job fraud on Instagram

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *Sept. 19, Belgrave Way and Caldew Street: Police received a report of theft of mail from a Canada Post mailbox. The complainant mailed six cheques, which they realized had been stolen, when the vendors began calling advising they had not received payment. Further investigation found one cheque had the payee’s name altered and had been cashed in Ontario. Investigation to be continued by Toronto Police. 

*Sept. 20, 8000 Block of 112th Street: Complainant reported, their walker valued at $200 was stolen from outside their residence. The walker is described as having a broken back wheel. No witnesses or surveillance video. The complainant referred to victim services as requested.

*Sept. 21, 8800 Block of Delwood Drive: Complainant reported, their vehicle was broken into sometime overnight while parked at the side of their residence. Items stolen include insurance papers, clothing, and car parts with a total value of $300. There was no damage to the vehicle. No surveillance video was available.

*Sept. 22, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported, they lost $5,000 when applying for a job they had found on Instagram. The suspect provided the complainant with five cheques which they deposited. Subsequently they found the funds gone from their account and they were advised by the bank that the cheques were fraudulent. The complainant confirmed, no banking details or personal information was provided to the suspect. Canada Anti-Fraud Centre informed of the incident. 

*Sept. 23, 11300 Block of 86A Avenue: Complainant reported, they left their vehicle parked on the street, and sometime overnight someone had broken into the vehicle. In the morning the door of the vehicle was found partially open, and their possessions were thrown around the vehicle. Items stolen include lotto tickets, reward cards, and small change. The landlord stated that surveillance video had been deleted in the morning.
