North Delta Crime Beat: Youth targeted in online photo extortion scam

Files of interest for this week from Delta Police.

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *Aug. 22, 8300 Block of Delsom Way:  A report was received that someone had broken into the parking garage and stole a Jeep. The suspect also punched the lock of another vehicle and stole a library card. A crowbar was then used to break into a second level of the parking garage where the front passenger window of a vehicle was smashed. Surveillance video shows a male, who then left the garage in the stolen Jeep. 

*Aug. 22, 7800 Block of 199th Street: Police recovered insurance documentation from a citizen. The owner of the documentation was contacted by police, and then discovered their vehicle had been broken into. Items stolen include sunglasses, dash cam, and two pouches of coins. No damage to the vehicle. Canvass for surveillance video proved negative. Vehicle owner advised to contact ICBC.

*Aug. 22, 7300 Block of 120th Street: The Loss Prevention Officer of a business reported a male suspect had left the store without paying for goods valued at $200. Police attended and located the male as described. Queries of police records indicated the suspect having a no-go condition to the store, and a warrant for their arrest. The suspect was transported to police cells and the stolen merchandise lodged in exhibits.

*Aug. 23, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported receiving a pop-up message on their computer, advising them it had been hacked with a phone number to call. The complainant called the number and complied with the instructions to transfer $8,700 from their bank account and deposit the funds into another account provided by the caller using Bitcoins. On discovering they were the victim of fraud, the complainant contacted their bank. Police advised complainant to contact Equifax and TransUnion.  Complainant to provide police with transaction records for the investigation to continue.

*Aug. 23, 9200 Block of Hardy Road: Complainant reported the theft, sometime overnight, of the catalytic converter from their vehicle parked across the street from their residence. A small red saw was found at the scene. File number provided for ICBC.

*Aug. 26, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported their son had exchanged explicit photographs with a female on Instagram and was now being extorted for $500. The victim has blocked the female and reported the incident to Instagram. Police confirmed no money has changed hands and advised the victim on safe practices regarding sending personal photos online. The incident is still under investigation.

*Aug. 26, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported having issues with their computer and called a phone number for assistance that they had sourced on their computer. As a result, the complainant purchased $500 in iTunes cards as requested. The gift card numbers were provided to the suspect before the complainant realized they were the victim of fraud. Police unable to track gift card transaction.  Complainant cancelled credit cards and changed passwords. 

*Aug. 27, 500 Block of Annance Court: A company reported they had received a call they believed was from an Arizona state trooper. They were advised that one of the companies’ drivers was involved in a traffic incident and owed money for repairs. The complainant provided the caller with $9,800 before they were informed, by the driver, that they had not been in an accident. An attempt to cancel the money transfers was not successful as the transfers had already been cashed.
